This document is to help explain how to install/uninstall LONE-TAR 4.x Bundle package


» Installing from FTP Site

LONE-TAR ® will be installed in the directory ‘/usr/lone-tar’
RESCUE-RANGER ® will be installed in the directory ‘/usr/rr’.
AIR-BAG ® will be installed in the directory '/usr/air-bag'
If these directories do not exist, they will be created automatically during installation.
Please read and follow all menu prompts.

FTP Installation:

  1. Login to your server as user ‘root’
    login: root
    password: ??? (Enter your password here)
  2. Lets connect to the GOSH.com FTP Site
    # cd /tmp
    # ftp ftp.gosh.com
    For login information please contact Support at 1.301.829.1622
  3. Once connected, lets get the proper version of LONE-TAR
    # ls -l
    Find directory for OS (sco5, sco6, linux, freebsd)
    # get OS_directory/LONE-TAR_filename
    *NOTE* this will place downloaded file in your present working directory
  4. Now it is time to install LONE-TAR Bundle

    LINUX
    ---------
    # cd /tmp
    # gzip -d lt4*-LNX.sh.gz
    *If 'gzip -d does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-LNX.sh

    SCO 5
    ---------------
    # cd /tmp
    # uncompress lt4*-OSR5.sh.Z
    *If 'uncompress' does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-OSR5.sh


    SCO 6
    ---------------
    # cd /tmp
    # gzip -d lt4*-OSR6.sh.gz
    *If 'gzip -d' does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-OSR6.sh


    FreeBSD
    ---------
    # cd /tmp
    # gzip -d lt4*-FBSD.sh.gz
    *If 'gzip -d' does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-FBSD.sh


CD-ROM Installation:

  1. Login to your server as user ‘root’
    login: root
    password: ??? (Enter your password here)
  2. Now lets mount the CD-ROM drive and begin the installation

    LINUX
    ---------
    *Replace '/dev/cdrom' with proper device name on your system
    # mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
    # cd /mnt
    # cp lt4*-LNX.sh.gz /tmp/lt4*-LNX.sh.gz
    # cd /tmp
    # gzip -d lt4*-LNX.sh.gz
    *If 'gzip -d does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-LNX.sh

    * IMPORTANT Notice for SCO 5 installations from CD *
    When you mount the CD, SCO 5 renames the file like example below:
    Downloaded filename: lt4316-OSR5.sh.Z | Filename on mounted CD Drive: LT4_0001.Z

    SCO 5
    ---------------
    *Replace '/dev/cd0' with proper device name on your system
    # mount /dev/cd0 /mnt
    # cd /mnt
    # cp lt4*-OSR5.sh.Z /tmp/lt4*-OSR5.sh.Z
    # cd /tmp
    # uncompress lt4*-OSR5.sh.Z
    *If 'uncompress' does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-OSR5.sh


    SCO 6
    ---------------
    *Replace '/dev/cd0' with proper device name on your system
    # mount /dev/cd0 /mnt
    # cd /mnt
    # cp lt4*-OSR6.sh.gz /tmp/lt4*-OSR6.sh.gz
    # cd /tmp
    # gzip -d lt4*-OSR6.sh.gz
    *If 'gzip -d' does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-OSR6.sh


    FreeBSD
    ---------
    *Replace '/dev/acd0' with proper device name on your system
    # mount /dev/acd0 /mnt
    # cd /mnt
    # cp lt4*-FBSD.sh.gz /tmp/lt4*-FBSD.sh.gz
    # cd /tmp
    # gzip -d lt4*-FBSD.sh.gz
    *If 'gzip -d' does not work, skip and try 'sh' command
    # sh lt4*-FBSD.sh


  • This will now begin the LONE-TAR and RESCUE-RANGER installation process. Ensure that media is inserted into all backup devices in order to perform proper Auto Detection. You may always add/modify additional devices later within the ‘Device Configuration Menu’, option #9 from the LONE-TAR Main Menu.
  • One the installation is complete, invoke the menu as follows:
    # ltmenu
  • Register your LONE-TAR at:
    * Make sure you select the right version when doing so.

Uninstalling LONE-TAR Bundle:

  1. From the command line, please do the following
# rm -Rf  /usr/lone-tar
# rm -Rf  /usr/rr
# rm -Rf  /usr/air-bag
# rm -Rf  /log
# rm -f  /bin/lone-tar
# rm -f  /bin/Lone-tar
# rm -f  /etc/Master_backup
